Biotech, Pharma and International Payment Platforms Make End-of-the-Week Gains

MoneyGram International, which was featured on Tuesday, is back near the top of our Rippers list — up 18%. $MGI is an international payment platform in the midst of a transformation to move the business to a digital-first emphasis. It is joined by CRISPR company Intellia Therapeutics which jumped 11%. $NTLA is one of a few CRISPR stocks we highlighted on Rippers back in September, and we’ve written a longer feature about CRISPR stocks to keep an eye on.

This week, stocks got a boost as news of positive vaccine trials came out Monday morning. As we mentioned Tuesday, some of the biggest gainers were companies from sectors trampled from the side effects of COVID-19. However, some of the biggest gainers were also just the biotechs and pharmas making the vaccine and COVID-19 treatments possible. Shares of $PFE rose on Monday and then fell throughout the week; $MRNA and $SRNE rose throughout the week. Meanwhile, other vaccine makers remained stagnant.

Repeat ripper FuboTV is back and ripping. The sports-centric TV streaming platform, which is planning a move into sports betting, has extended its massive gains for the year this week with a 40% run. $FUBO, which IPOed in October, has now run over 270% in the last two and a half months. Despite what everyone expected, the biggest IPO of December wasn’t Airbnb or DoorDash. It was a lesser known enterprise AI company called C3.ai. $AI has gone on a 40% run since it listed on Dec. 9. The company helps facilitate predictive analytics, big data insights and internet of things applications through its robust software stack. The company ripped 17.4% in trading today.

Today’s biggest Ripper is seeing green after one of its biggest investments is being acquired by – you guessed it – a SPAC. $CURO, which owns 40% of Katapault, will receive a $365 million payout with an option to receive $30m more in shares in the newly formed company. $CURO has jumped 88.7% since FinServ Acquisition Group announced its intention to acquire Katapault Holdings. Katapault, which provides ecommerce point-of-sale lease purchase options, will immediately begin trading as $FSRV.

FuboTV Extends Gains, Plans Move into Sports Betting

Align, the creator of the metal braces alternative Invisalign, is proving that paid and influencer advertising is kind of a big deal. For the last few years, $ALGN has doubled down on social media as a meaningful medium for advertising. In that same period of time, there has been a 25.6% year-over-year increase in teens using Invisalign. The stock skyrocketed nearly 35% today on news of the earnings.

The Gap is trimming fat. The retail giant and owner of Old Navy, Athleta, Banana Republic and its namesake retail store is planning to close stores and focus on e-commerce. The news has sent shares of $GPS 13% higher today. The shift in physical retail to online retail accelerated this year due to COVID-19 — something we have covered in a number of other stocks.

Over the last few years, Snapchat’s user growth has fallen off, even as ad revenues have started to make the company float. This is mainly due to the lack of presence outside of the U.S., TikTok and Facebook domination and the abysmal Android version of the app. However, for the first time in years, Snapchat managed to start growing again. The social media app posted their highest daily active user growth rate since 2017 and beat analyst expectations for Q3. Shares in $SNAP are up 37% since the earnings call.

Last week, Jack Dorsey's mobile payments company Square, Inc made headlines when it announced its majority ownership acquisition of Jay-Z's TIDAL streaming platform. This foray into the music business is a twist for the financial services company — one that Howard Lindzon's guest Ryan Gilbert helped bring to fruition.

FinTech Acquisition Corp. is acquiring EToro, a popular European alternative to Robinhood. $FTCV, which offers crypto and stock trading in Europe, rose 43% on the news. In 2018, EToro began offering limited crypto trading in the U.S. The broker plans to expand stock trading into the U.S. later this year. 

Online sandbox game platform ROBLOX has had an excellent first week on markets. It quickly captured the attention of ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood, who added it to her $ARKW portfolio hours after IPO. This week, it’s getting another lift from Stifel, who has set $RBLX's price target at $85. The momentum from both retail and institutional investors has sent $RBLX rising nearly 7% today.

iHeartMedia is fielding an investor offer to buy nearly half of the company, sending shares of the stock up 11%. The offer, which has been filed with the Federal Communications Commission for approval, allows Global Media & Entertainment Investments to increase its 8.7% stake in iHeartMedia to as much as 49.99% of the company. Global Media owns radio stations, predominantly in London. The deal for $IHRT is pending regulatory approval.

Zillow and the Future of Real Estate | Voices of Wall Street

Canadian pharmaceutical company Tilray jumped over 40% today after announcing it had secured a deal to import and distribute medical cannabis in the United Kingdom. The partnership with Grow Pharma will allow $TLRY to foray into a completely new geography.

Other marijuana players got a boost from Tilray’s blockbuster deal, including Aphria and OrganiGram Holdings. $APHA jumped 25%, OrganiGram jumped 32.4%, and major cannabis ETF $MJ jumped 13.4% today.

One of the most prominent “momentum” plays to come out of the Wall Street Bets community since the $GME short squeeze is a lesser-known cannabis producer named Sundial Growers. The Canadian grower has an attractive price-to-sale ratio. $SNDL was at risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq Exchange after falling below $1 back in March last year. However, just since the start of the year, the company has run up 200% after being elevated by chatter on the reddit forum.
