Semiconductor and Cancer Diagnostic Companies Jump After Major Acquisitions

The semiconductor space is undergoing a seismic shift. Nowhere else is this more evident than in Advanced Micro Devices, a company which was suggested to be in imminent danger just five years ago. Today, $AMD announced their $35 billion all-stock acquisition of Xilinx. The deal, which was announced informally earlier this month, accompanied kickass earnings for Q3. $AMD sank 4%; $XLNX rose over 9%.

The diagnostic company that creates cancer diagnostics such as Cologuard made two hefty acquisitions today. Shares of $EXAS have been depressed since August 2019 when the company merged with Genomic Health, something done to push them toward profitability. However, stocks shot up over 23% today on the plan to acquire two blood diagnostic companies: Thrive for $2.15 billion and Base Genomics for $410 million. Both acquisitions are expected to be used to bolster Exact Sciences’ cancer screening diagnostics for 10 different types of cancer.

Our biggest Ripper of the day is Scholar Rock. This lesser-known biotech makes a drug for the rare genetic disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). There is currently no cure and few available treatments for SMA. $SRRK announced positive results from their phase 2 clinical trial for their SRK-015 drug for patients with SMA type 2 and 3. On the news, $SRRK announced their intent to do a capital raise to fund more trials for their extensive pipeline of forthcoming trials. The stock popped 124% today to $30.76.

Zillow and the Future of Real Estate | Voices of Wall Street

Zillow's President on SNL Skit and GenZillow | Voices of Wall Street

In one of the most bizarre events of 2020, a crash in oil demand caused its price to go negative. Today, the 13 member nations of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) made the decision to cut oil output, allowing oil to jump to its highest price in nearly two years. OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, is responsible for 44% of global oil production. On the news, Crude Oil ETN $OIL, which tracks the price of oil on markets, rose 4.7% today. 

Given that rise of oil in the aftermath of the decision, our Rippers today share a common theme: W&T Offshore, PDC Energy, Continental Resources, QEP Resources, SM Energy Company, and Diamondback Energy are all oil & gas exploration companies. The small-cap oil players jumped roughly 13% in aggregate. These players helped the oil tracking & gas exploration/production ETF $XOP rise 4%. 

As oil tee’d off, the rest of the market was in decline over pessimism around interest rates, economic growth, and market health. Call that Bullish Dippers! The tech-heavy NASDAQ had the largest drop today, with $QQQ falling over 2% intraday. Leading up to today’s sell-off, prominent investors like Michael Burry (who predicted the 2008 housing crisis) warned about a market collection and stagnation

OIL BOUNCES BACK FROM 2020 CRASH, MEANWHILE $QQQ FALLS

Early this morning, Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $50,000. In the last month, Bitcoin has run up over 39% -— energized by Elon Musk and Tesla’s endorsement, a swath of new investors, and renewed interest around crypto.

Some Bitcoin mining companies made repeat appearances on today’s Rippers. These included Marathon Patent Group and Riot Blockchain, which both rose over 13% today. $MARA and $RIOT have more than doubled this year as they announced plans to expand their Bitcoin mining operations.

One of the biggest movers was the small-cap crypto mining company SOS Limited, which recently announced it would add over 5,000 miners to their infrastructure. $SOS was one of the most-shorted stocks before it suddenly broke out over 59% in trading today.

Joining these sophisticated Bitcoin mining operations was one of the few publicly traded companies that builds the miners. Canaan, which builds Bitcoin ASIC miners, broke out over 50.6% today.

Bitcoin to the Moon!

Party City is celebrating an impressive second quarter, fueled mainly by double-digit digital sales. The company also reported Halloween brought in greater-than-expected results, suggesting that some people may not have followed stay-at-home orders even as COVID-19 numbers rise. $PRTY is up 20.9% today.

Cable television has fallen out of fervor over the last few years in favor of over-the-top streaming alternatives. FuboTV, which has its crosshairs fixated on live sports, hit its stride in trading today. They rose 14.4% after their third quarter earnings. The company has been growing their subscription business and advertising revenue; however, the big gap up in $FUBO also comes as the company acknowledges their intention to make a move into online sports wagering.

Palantir Technologies, which IPOed at the end of September, has doubled in just several weeks. There’s a lot of money in government contracts, defense, and enterprise data. However, that money is at the center of the company and some of its founders (*cough* Peter Thiel) have been the center of a discussion about whether its core business is ethical. Regardless, prominent hedge fund investors are picking up shares, and shares of $PLTR are rising to the tune of double-digits.

Party City, Live Sports Streaming Services, and Government Contractors Clean Up in Earnings

Industries battered by COVID-19 have had the biggest gains on Monday and Tuesday after clarity emerged in the presidential election and $PFE vaccine data. Shares of travel companies saw some of the biggest jumps. The travel and tourism tech ETF $AWAY and U.S. airline ETF $JETS both jumped over 10% since the opening bell rang Monday morning.

REITs were also among the biggest benefactors from the positive vaccine and election outlook. Shares of the iShares Global REIT ETF, which invests in a large variety of international real estate companies, jumped 8.2%. $REET was joined by the monolithic Vanguard Real Estate ETF, $VNQ, which jumped over 5%. REITs have been hammered amidst COVID-19 because of concerns about repayment and investment stability. Both ETFs fell over 36% from December 2019 to March 2020 amidst the fallout from the pandemic.

Two financial service companies jumped onto our Rippers list today on the heels of their Q3 earnings reports. Money transfer company Moneygram jumped 10.4% after it reported revenue growth. Over the last few years, $MGI has been advancing a digital-first transformation of its international business. It was joined by Nelnet, a student loan servicer, which has been diversifying into banking and other financial services. The bulk of $NNI revenue growth in Q3 came from “asset generation” on derivatives.

Which ETFs Are Making Major Gains Despite COVID-19?

Canadian pharmaceutical company Tilray jumped over 40% today after announcing it had secured a deal to import and distribute medical cannabis in the United Kingdom. The partnership with Grow Pharma will allow $TLRY to foray into a completely new geography.

Other marijuana players got a boost from Tilray’s blockbuster deal, including Aphria and OrganiGram Holdings. $APHA jumped 25%, OrganiGram jumped 32.4%, and major cannabis ETF $MJ jumped 13.4% today.

One of the most prominent “momentum” plays to come out of the Wall Street Bets community since the $GME short squeeze is a lesser-known cannabis producer named Sundial Growers. The Canadian grower has an attractive price-to-sale ratio. $SNDL was at risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq Exchange after falling below $1 back in March last year. However, just since the start of the year, the company has run up 200% after being elevated by chatter on the reddit forum.

Spotting Financial Tech Trends with Square & Jack Dorsey's First Advisor

Two fuel cell companies made double-digit gains in trading today. Plug Power, which announced a partnership with French automaker Renault, jumped over 22.3% today. $PLUG, which makes hydrogen fuel cells, was one of last year’s most popular stocks among retail investors. Excitement in $PLUG helped push up shares of FuelCell Energy. $FCEL, which makes commercial-scale fuel cell systems, jumped nearly 21% today.

Today’s weirdest Ripper has us thinking we’ve reached ‘peak retail investor.’ Shares of the animal health and veterinarian business Zomedica jumped 39% today. The reason? Carole Baskin of “Tiger King” promoted the penny stock in a video. The video appears to have been a purchased engagement from Cameo, a website where people can pay for customizable videos from celebrities and influencers. Quaint e-commerce company Etsy — and one of 2020’s biggest Rippers — took off in trading today. $ETSY, which caters to the DIY and crafting crowd, rose 12% for no attributable reason. However, new consumer reports about the explosion of e-commerce and online shopping in Q4 2020 help support excitement in the stock. $ETSY jumped 250% last year and has already risen 14% since the start of 2021.

Tesla & General Motors: These two U.S. automakers were the only two companies that maxed their quota under the last EV tax plan. When the companies built 200,000 cars, the rebates would no longer be available to new buyers. This bill pledges to change the quota, but to what extent is uncertain. Regardless, $TSLA and $GM are already arguably the two most popular EV producers. They stand to benefit the most.

Chargepoint: $CHPT is one of the oldest EV companies and has already jumped over 38% on the news around the infrastructure plan. The company boasts over 114,700 charging locations globally.

Volkswagen: $VWAGY plans to begin mass-producing electric vehicles next year. Whilst they’re not as technically competitive as $TSLA, they are still the biggest automaker in the world. The company owns Audi, Bugatti, Bentley, and others. They’re also owned by Porsche, which trades at a slight discount as $POAHY.

BMW: $BWMYY is another European automaker throwing their energy behind EVs. The company boasts an EV version of their MINI, a compact sedan called the BMW i3, and an electric SUV called the X3.

The Biden administration plans to roll out $100 billion in new federal electric vehicle (EV) consumer rebates to consumers as part of a new over $2 trillion infrastructure plan.
