Semiconductor and Cancer Diagnostic Companies Jump After Major Acquisitions

The semiconductor space is undergoing a seismic shift. Nowhere else is this more evident than in Advanced Micro Devices, a company which was suggested to be in imminent danger just five years ago. Today, $AMD announced their $35 billion all-stock acquisition of Xilinx. The deal, which was announced informally earlier this month, accompanied kickass earnings for Q3. $AMD sank 4%; $XLNX rose over 9%.

The diagnostic company that creates cancer diagnostics such as Cologuard made two hefty acquisitions today. Shares of $EXAS have been depressed since August 2019 when the company merged with Genomic Health, something done to push them toward profitability. However, stocks shot up over 23% today on the plan to acquire two blood diagnostic companies: Thrive for $2.15 billion and Base Genomics for $410 million. Both acquisitions are expected to be used to bolster Exact Sciences’ cancer screening diagnostics for 10 different types of cancer.

Our biggest Ripper of the day is Scholar Rock. This lesser-known biotech makes a drug for the rare genetic disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). There is currently no cure and few available treatments for SMA. $SRRK announced positive results from their phase 2 clinical trial for their SRK-015 drug for patients with SMA type 2 and 3. On the news, $SRRK announced their intent to do a capital raise to fund more trials for their extensive pipeline of forthcoming trials. The stock popped 124% today to $30.76.

Canadian pharmaceutical company Tilray jumped over 40% today after announcing it had secured a deal to import and distribute medical cannabis in the United Kingdom. The partnership with Grow Pharma will allow $TLRY to foray into a completely new geography.

Other marijuana players got a boost from Tilray’s blockbuster deal, including Aphria and OrganiGram Holdings. $APHA jumped 25%, OrganiGram jumped 32.4%, and major cannabis ETF $MJ jumped 13.4% today.

One of the most prominent “momentum” plays to come out of the Wall Street Bets community since the $GME short squeeze is a lesser-known cannabis producer named Sundial Growers. The Canadian grower has an attractive price-to-sale ratio. $SNDL was at risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq Exchange after falling below $1 back in March last year. However, just since the start of the year, the company has run up 200% after being elevated by chatter on the reddit forum.

How Square, Inc Launched the FinTech Boom | Investing for Profit and Joy

This week, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed three bills into law, officially legalizing recreational cannabis sales, as well as enacting criminal justice reform. After a long delay, the Garden State has finally gone green.

Why Cannabis Was the Big Winner in 2020 Election

The creative sharing platform Pinterest has been an unanticipated earnings Goliath for several straight quarters. Today, shares of $PINS are up 27% after a killer earnings report sent masses of investors flocking. Some of you will recall that shares of $SNAP popped after a similar earnings report — a sign that stay-at-home orders and COVID-19 antics fueled a rush in these two social media stocks. However, not all earnings reports are made equal. Shares of Twitter saw their gains from the day released after their earnings call suggested user growth was slowing. $TWTR fell 14.5% after hours.

Speaking of stay-at-home orders, a large number of people felt inspired to cook more at home. More food meant more leftovers and thus a way to store said leftovers. And where there are leftovers, there are opportunities (and containers). Tupperware is back on the Rippers list for the third time this year. As their name suggests, it might have something to do with plastic food storage. Shares of $TUP are up 11.3% today as their profits quadrupled in Q3 2020 — evidence of another residual of the pandemic.

If you’ve ever researched stocks or bonds, odds are you might have used Morningstar. This company provides investment research and management. $MORN saw double-digit growth in their investment data and private equity software in Q3 2020. During COVID-19, an increased volume of investors have gotten into investing; which has in-part fueled this growth. However, another critical element is the investment in early-stage companies (venture capital) — something Morningstar is creating software to facilitate. Shares of $MORN rose 9.5% after their earnings call.
