How This Gaming Company's Viral Moment Turned into a Movement | The Confident Investor

In a new "Voices of Wall Street," host Hope King speaks with Andrew Freedman, Hedgeye's Communications Sector Head, about his bear case for fuboTV.

fuboTV, along with many investors, is optimistic about the opportunity in streaming subscriptions, connected TV advertising, and sports betting. However, Freedman says the company has a small probability of surviving due to the "structurally unprofitable, broken" business model. 

Freedman adds that fuboTV is expanding into sports betting because it knows the streaming business is unsustainable as a standalone unit, but argues the costs of launching a sportsbook will be difficult to manage. Freedman admits there are two paths for fuboTV to achieve long-term success, and lays out the scenarios for fuboTV to emerge as a winner in the streaming wars.

FuboTV Bear Gives Company Slim Chance of Surviving Streaming Wars | Voices of Wall Street

Online payments company Payoneer is looking to go public in a SPAC arrangement with FTAC Olympus Acquisition Corp. Though the deal is not closed, shares of $FTOC rose 23% this week on the news. Payoneer, a lesser known global payments company, made $300 million in revenue in 2019. They help service payments in freelancing, ecommerce and digital marketing companies like $FVRR, $UPWK, $AMZN, and $ABNB.

Rumors are circulating that China-based tech giant Tencent is looking to acquire more gaming companies in buyouts or investments. This sent shares of several gaming companies higher today. Tencent already has invested in a number of large gaming companies like Epic Games and ROBLOX. On the news, the ETFs $NERD and $HERO, which broadly track the gaming sector, are trading up today.

Today, Deutsche Bank abandoned its negative take on department store Dillards. On the news, $DDS traded up 13%. It seems a little backwards for department stores to have success in an era with so much emphasis on ecommerce, but a handful of physical retailers have had solid years despite COVID-19. We’ve reported on GameStop’s rise since last August. At the time, $GME was worth just $7. In less than 6 months, it has gone on a 700% run. Almost all of the run is based on the hopes that physical players can modernize and leverage their existing footprint.

Online Payments Company Payoneer in Advanced Talks with SPAC

The rising prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies caused a handful of crypto-facing companies such as $MARA and $RIOT to go on monstrous runs over the last few months. Now another fad is boiling over from the world of crypto into the world of equity markets: non-fungible tokens. NFTs are catching interest from investors and publicly traded companies.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet, posted March 21, 2006, as an NFT for $2.9 million. He plans to donate the proceeds from the NFT to “Give Directly Africa Fund,” a charity helping people in poverty. But we’re not really sure what this sale means for the buyer. Do they actually own the tweet? Do they own the rights to the tweet? Probably not. By the way, $TWTR is down 1.43% today - so nobody cares.

In seriousness though, NFTs are causing moves on markets. Toy maker Funko, which makes licensed collectibles around Disney, the NBA, NFL and Harry Potter, surged on markets today because of rumors they’ll be making digital collectibles. $FNKO was up 9.8% today.

Takung Art Co., a Hong Kong-based art marketplace helping investors and art collectors buy Asian fine art, is also catching NFT buzz. $TKAT rose on news that the company wants to “get into the NFT space.” Seeing as though it already interfaces in the physical art world, $TKAT’s incursion into digital art collectibles has captured more attention than generic firms. $TKAT is up 9.8% today.

FuboTV CEO Talks 2021 Expansion plans for Live Sports streaming service.

There’s a euphoric market for electric vehicles. New companies with small track records and giant ambitions are testing the waters of the stock market to raise funds and capitalize on the excitement. One of the emerging electric vehicle (EV) companies on investors’ radars is Fisker, which hopes to capture a significant share of the market with a business model far different from Tesla’s. 

Dion Rabouin, Host of Voices of Wall Street and Markets Editor at Axios, spoke with Henrik Fisker, founder and CEO of Fisker, about how the company plans to ramp up production at a faster rate than Tesla did, why it’s low pricing puts its Fisker Ocean SUV in a league of its own and how a Biden presidency impacts the electrification of the automobile industry.

Fisker CEO on Winning Electric Vehicle Market Share with an Anti-Tesla Business Model

The semiconductor space is undergoing a seismic shift. Nowhere else is this more evident than in Advanced Micro Devices, a company which was suggested to be in imminent danger just five years ago. Today, $AMD announced their $35 billion all-stock acquisition of Xilinx. The deal, which was announced informally earlier this month, accompanied kickass earnings for Q3. $AMD sank 4%; $XLNX rose over 9%.

The diagnostic company that creates cancer diagnostics such as Cologuard made two hefty acquisitions today. Shares of $EXAS have been depressed since August 2019 when the company merged with Genomic Health, something done to push them toward profitability. However, stocks shot up over 23% today on the plan to acquire two blood diagnostic companies: Thrive for $2.15 billion and Base Genomics for $410 million. Both acquisitions are expected to be used to bolster Exact Sciences’ cancer screening diagnostics for 10 different types of cancer.

Our biggest Ripper of the day is Scholar Rock. This lesser-known biotech makes a drug for the rare genetic disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). There is currently no cure and few available treatments for SMA. $SRRK announced positive results from their phase 2 clinical trial for their SRK-015 drug for patients with SMA type 2 and 3. On the news, $SRRK announced their intent to do a capital raise to fund more trials for their extensive pipeline of forthcoming trials. The stock popped 124% today to $30.76.

HomeBrew is a seed stage venture capital fund that provides support and early investments to mission-driven entrepreneurs in cutting-edge fields like FinTech and machine learning.

What a VC Investor Learned From Failed Companies | Investing for Profit and Joy

Online lender Upstart Holdings, which uses education and employment instead of credit score for loans, nearly doubled today after announcing its acquisition of a leading automotive retail software player Prodigy Software. This acquisition will allow them to expand into automobile loans. $UPST rose 89.3% today. 

William-Sonoma has become the latest retailer to get a boost from e-commerce and online shopping. In the company’s Q4 earnings report, comparable brand revenue growth jumped 26%. Online shopping growth rose over 50%, helping the company beat Wall Street estimates. $WSM rose nearly 19%. 

Remember Google Glass? A quaint tech company called Vuzix is making them, but better -- and they popped 8.5% today thanks to recent earnings. $VUZI creates smart glasses for enterprise use in insurance, manufacturing, healthcare and security-facing companies. The company has run up over 181% since the start of 2021, bucking the broader trend with tech.

How StockX Co-founder Josh Luber Turned His Childhood Love of Sneakers into a Billion-Dollar Company

The U.S. government passed a new end-of-year stimulus package, which included a $600 stimulus “stimmy” check. Though it was expected that the stimulus would send stocks in the green, the last few weeks of 2020 priced in much of the stimulus package. In addition, the state of Georgia is hosting two senate elections today to decide the fate of the U.S. Senate. This decides whether or not Joe Biden will command a majority for the first two years in office, which has left some investors with mixed feelings. As a result, stock indexes pared losses yesterday on the first trading day of the year.

As stocks went down, cryptocurrencies went up. At the start of December, Bitcoin-mining companies such as $MARA and $RIOT made their way onto the Rippers list. Since then, Bitcoin has taken an even more aggressive trajectory - running all the way up to $35,000. Ethereum, another cryptocurrency, has risen above $1,100. Both of these price points are all-time highs and represent a ‘second coming’ in the crypto market.

The New York Stock Exchange made the decision to remove three Chinese telecom companies from the exchange. This decision was made in light of recent laws passed to hold Chinese businesses to higher auditing standards. The passing of these laws was highlighted on Rippers a few months ago as “something to keep in mind”, especially given the propensity for poor China-U.S. relations to bleed over into a Biden presidency. The law specifically requires delisting businesses which “pose a threat to U.S. national security.”

Industries battered by COVID-19 have had the biggest gains on Monday and Tuesday after clarity emerged in the presidential election and $PFE vaccine data. Shares of travel companies saw some of the biggest jumps. The travel and tourism tech ETF $AWAY and U.S. airline ETF $JETS both jumped over 10% since the opening bell rang Monday morning.

REITs were also among the biggest benefactors from the positive vaccine and election outlook. Shares of the iShares Global REIT ETF, which invests in a large variety of international real estate companies, jumped 8.2%. $REET was joined by the monolithic Vanguard Real Estate ETF, $VNQ, which jumped over 5%. REITs have been hammered amidst COVID-19 because of concerns about repayment and investment stability. Both ETFs fell over 36% from December 2019 to March 2020 amidst the fallout from the pandemic.

Two financial service companies jumped onto our Rippers list today on the heels of their Q3 earnings reports. Money transfer company Moneygram jumped 10.4% after it reported revenue growth. Over the last few years, $MGI has been advancing a digital-first transformation of its international business. It was joined by Nelnet, a student loan servicer, which has been diversifying into banking and other financial services. The bulk of $NNI revenue growth in Q3 came from “asset generation” on derivatives.

FuboTV’s CEO on How Sports Betting Will Change Streaming | Voices of Wall Street

Repeat ripper FuboTV is back and ripping. The sports-centric TV streaming platform, which is planning a move into sports betting, has extended its massive gains for the year this week with a 40% run. $FUBO, which IPOed in October, has now run over 270% in the last two and a half months. Despite what everyone expected, the biggest IPO of December wasn’t Airbnb or DoorDash. It was a lesser known enterprise AI company called C3.ai. $AI has gone on a 40% run since it listed on Dec. 9. The company helps facilitate predictive analytics, big data insights and internet of things applications through its robust software stack. The company ripped 17.4% in trading today.

Today’s biggest Ripper is seeing green after one of its biggest investments is being acquired by – you guessed it – a SPAC. $CURO, which owns 40% of Katapault, will receive a $365 million payout with an option to receive $30m more in shares in the newly formed company. $CURO has jumped 88.7% since FinServ Acquisition Group announced its intention to acquire Katapault Holdings. Katapault, which provides ecommerce point-of-sale lease purchase options, will immediately begin trading as $FSRV.
