OIL BOUNCES BACK FROM 2020 CRASH, MEANWHILE $QQQ FALLS

In one of the most bizarre events of 2020, a crash in oil demand caused its price to go negative. Today, the 13 member nations of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) made the decision to cut oil output, allowing oil to jump to its highest price in nearly two years. OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, is responsible for 44% of global oil production. On the news, Crude Oil ETN $OIL, which tracks the price of oil on markets, rose 4.7% today. 

Given that rise of oil in the aftermath of the decision, our Rippers today share a common theme: W&T Offshore, PDC Energy, Continental Resources, QEP Resources, SM Energy Company, and Diamondback Energy are all oil & gas exploration companies. The small-cap oil players jumped roughly 13% in aggregate. These players helped the oil tracking & gas exploration/production ETF $XOP rise 4%. 

As oil tee’d off, the rest of the market was in decline over pessimism around interest rates, economic growth, and market health. Call that Bullish Dippers! The tech-heavy NASDAQ had the largest drop today, with $QQQ falling over 2% intraday. Leading up to today’s sell-off, prominent investors like Michael Burry (who predicted the 2008 housing crisis) warned about a market collection and stagnation

Will The Texas Winter Storm Hurt Insurance Companies? | Dumb Money

The rising prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies caused a handful of crypto-facing companies such as $MARA and $RIOT to go on monstrous runs over the last few months. Now another fad is boiling over from the world of crypto into the world of equity markets: non-fungible tokens. NFTs are catching interest from investors and publicly traded companies.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet, posted March 21, 2006, as an NFT for $2.9 million. He plans to donate the proceeds from the NFT to “Give Directly Africa Fund,” a charity helping people in poverty. But we’re not really sure what this sale means for the buyer. Do they actually own the tweet? Do they own the rights to the tweet? Probably not. By the way, $TWTR is down 1.43% today - so nobody cares.

In seriousness though, NFTs are causing moves on markets. Toy maker Funko, which makes licensed collectibles around Disney, the NBA, NFL and Harry Potter, surged on markets today because of rumors they’ll be making digital collectibles. $FNKO was up 9.8% today.

Takung Art Co., a Hong Kong-based art marketplace helping investors and art collectors buy Asian fine art, is also catching NFT buzz. $TKAT rose on news that the company wants to “get into the NFT space.” Seeing as though it already interfaces in the physical art world, $TKAT’s incursion into digital art collectibles has captured more attention than generic firms. $TKAT is up 9.8% today.

NFTs are catching interest from investors and publicly traded companies.

Chris is up $175k on his recent $NIO trade, but if he had gotten in just a bit earlier that number could have been closer to $700k if he had gotten into the stock when our featured guests from the Dumb Money community suggested to get into the stock back in late September of 2020.

Investors Translate Weibo Posts to Gauge Stock Interest in $NIO

This week, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed three bills into law, officially legalizing recreational cannabis sales, as well as enacting criminal justice reform. After a long delay, the Garden State has finally gone green.

This is a move that cannabis investment expert Todd Harrison predicts will encourage other East Coast states to follow suit.

Why Right NOW Is the Best Time to Invest in Weed | Investing for Profit and Joy

Early this morning, Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $50,000. In the last month, Bitcoin has run up over 39% -— energized by Elon Musk and Tesla’s endorsement, a swath of new investors, and renewed interest around crypto.

Some Bitcoin mining companies made repeat appearances on today’s Rippers. These included Marathon Patent Group and Riot Blockchain, which both rose over 13% today. $MARA and $RIOT have more than doubled this year as they announced plans to expand their Bitcoin mining operations.

One of the biggest movers was the small-cap crypto mining company SOS Limited, which recently announced it would add over 5,000 miners to their infrastructure. $SOS was one of the most-shorted stocks before it suddenly broke out over 59% in trading today.

Joining these sophisticated Bitcoin mining operations was one of the few publicly traded companies that builds the miners. Canaan, which builds Bitcoin ASIC miners, broke out over 50.6% today.

Bitcoin to the Moon!

Canadian pharmaceutical company Tilray jumped over 40% today after announcing it had secured a deal to import and distribute medical cannabis in the United Kingdom. The partnership with Grow Pharma will allow $TLRY to foray into a completely new geography.

Other marijuana players got a boost from Tilray’s blockbuster deal, including Aphria and OrganiGram Holdings. $APHA jumped 25%, OrganiGram jumped 32.4%, and major cannabis ETF $MJ jumped 13.4% today.

One of the most prominent “momentum” plays to come out of the Wall Street Bets community since the $GME short squeeze is a lesser-known cannabis producer named Sundial Growers. The Canadian grower has an attractive price-to-sale ratio. $SNDL was at risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq Exchange after falling below $1 back in March last year. However, just since the start of the year, the company has run up 200% after being elevated by chatter on the reddit forum.

Remember the days before iPhones when the coveted phone of choice was the Blackberry? It may seem like a vague memory of the past, but BlackBerry just had one of its best days in years. The company rose over 59% in the early week after striking a deal with Amazon’s AWS cloud on an intelligent data platform for vehicles. The deal between $AMZN and $BB would focus on helping automakers understand and utilize the sensor data collected from vehicles.

Several cybersecurity cloud platforms rallied in trading today. Crowdstrike ($CRWD) ran up over 13% and Zscaler rallied over 26%. $ZS reported earnings from a strong quarter, while also reiterated a robust outlook for the quarter ahead. $ZS is mainly a cybersecurity company which has benefited a large volume of companies in need of security solutions for broad technical operations. It had the third-best performance among U.S tech stocks this year right behind Zoom ($ZM) and Fastly ($FSLY).

One of the biggest IPOs of the year was Snowflake, which captured investing interest from Berkshire Hathaway and Salesforce. Many wondered if both companies overpaid to get a piece of the pie, but there might be enough to go around. Shares of $SNOW popped over 16% after their first earnings report showed the company with 119% revenue growth in the trailing quarter. Though the company is still losing money, growth and cost-cutting could contribute to the company turning profits late next year.

Markets have been fighting to stay in the green over the last few days given concerns about interest rates and the broader market. This has made for very few Rippers as stocks have remained suppressed:

⏰ Today’s biggest Ripper is American watchmaker Movado. The company radically exceeded the Q4 earnings, delivering nearly double the expected earnings per share than was estimated. This came even as revenue dipped for the company. The surprise caused $MOV to rise 18.6% today.



Markets have been fighting to stay in the green over the last few days.

Apple held their "Time Flies" event on September 15, 2020, and Chris, Dave, and Jordan were livestreaming their reactions over on @Dumb Money LIVE while it happened. The most interesting thing to come from the event wasn't the new iPad Air or the Apple Watch SE: it was something that Apple only devoted like, two minutes to. Apple's introducing a new fitness program to compete with the likes of Peloton.
