And finally, to make the week even more bizarre, Professor Galloway, aka Professor Cold Takes, decided to follow in Chamath’s footsteps and <a href="https://twitter.com/litcapital/status/1379865657483915278?s=20">posted a thirst trap</a> for the world to see.Once again, big stuff is going down, but what does it all MEME? For the unfamiliar, Archegos was a family office that heavily levered up and made a handful of risky bets on stocks like Viacom, which started to slide mid-last week. After facing margin calls on their positions, Archegos was unable to provide extra cash, so the banks began selling off stocks on the fund’s behalf. Credit Suisse and Nomura took the biggest hit, with the Swiss bank reporting that it will lose an estimated $4.7 billion from the debacle.Dr. Parik’s Diagnosis: Whether it’s on Robinhood or an institutional fund, investors will literally lever up their portfolio and then get margin-called instead of going to therapy. Although retail sales aren’t expected to begin until 2022, it is now legal for New Yorkers to possess and smoke the sweet leaf, as long as they’re over the age of 21. Analysts estimate that the New York cannabis market could be <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/25/nyregion/ny-legalize-marijuana.html#:~:text=The%20cannabis%20market%20in%20New,York%20Medical%20Cannabis%20Industry%20Association.">worth as much as  $7 billion</a> once it’s fully established and regulated. Dr. Parik’s Diagnosis: This is bullish news for weed #stonks, which, like smokers, should start to get higher if the industry takes off. The question arises whether legal weed will produce the same effects as illegal weed. She also announced that she’s working with a few artists to make her first NFT drop in just a few weeks. Dr. Parik’s Diagnosis: Instead of spending <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/how-beeple-crashed-the-art-world">$69 million on a piece of art</a>, you can own exactly the same thing by simply taking a screenshot. <html><body>If there’s anything I’ve learned in the last year, it’s that people just say words. Sometimes they just say words even though they’re not true. Sometimes they say them because they like the sound of their own voice. But generally, people say words because they want to believe something (even if it is factually incorrect).Some of my favorite falsehoods fall at the cross section of politics and finance. You’ve probably seen this scenario play out before — certain groups of people air their grievances with a certain president or policy by warning that it will bring about some sort of cultural cataclysm that will result in the heat death of American democracy. It’s a rapture they foretell in every election cycle, or whenever convenient, and it’s one that has become even more common as the ugly rhetoric on social media has fed it.One of the most convenient falsehoods that ends up repeated is that Democrats are bad for markets. This has floated back into the discourse since Joe Biden was elected. The right insists that Biden, a moderate president, is actually a socialist extremist who is going to bring about a market crash through high taxes, social programs and other policy that they probably made up.  However, if you take a look at the first-term performance of markets in the tenure of every president since 1929, there is no meaningful correlation between the political party of the President and market returns. There might be some correlation <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikepatton/2021/01/12/stock-performance-and-the-political-party-in-power-an-historical-look-at-the-past-75-years/?sh=7f2346787a64">between the composition of the government and market returns</a>, but that might be confounded by other factors.<figure class="image"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/9RZnEPoOvRRHrM1flMCUBMiEVrzgfJVCe5U17dMFVqm25Lt6jkhMYr1OYqx69Ge1-QzsWkyJ2RIAwzNNm0keLm7SL_qc6qTsYXUZ4-JevlNwPzjziekB3CLRbK3P2Fn5HtMRWrwv"/><figcaption><a href="https://www.questmont.com/wealth-management-minut/political-presumptions">Source: Questmont</a></figcaption></figure>During the first term of Republican and former President Herbert Hoover, <a href="https://www.macrotrends.net/2614/sp500-performance-by-president-from-election-date">the S&amp;P 500 fell 73%</a>. A knee jerk reaction might be: “Republicans ruin markets.” But that’s because you don’t know the context. Hoover had just entered office in March 1929, the onset of the Great Depression. Did Hoover start the Great Depression? No. Could he have done more to soften the severity of it? Yes. And if he did, he might not have been decisively defeated by a progressive Democrat.That leads us to Franklin Roosevelt, the progressive Democrat who succeeded Hoover and passed the New Deal. For the unacquainted, the New Deal is credited for creating America’s modern safety net. Democrats praised it. Republicans hated it. But it doesn’t matter. In his first term, the <a href="https://www.macrotrends.net/2614/sp500-performance-by-president-from-election-date">S&amp;P 500 appreciated a nearly 164% gain</a> — and his popularity would enable him to seek three terms as president (when it was still legal). But that 164% gain in his first term didn’t last. By the end of FDR’s presidency, the <a href="https://www.macrotrends.net/2614/sp500-performance-by-president-from-election-date">S&amp;P was only up 96%</a>. This is just one example that substantiates that the market doesn’t live in a bubble; it has ebbs and flows. The market is one method for understanding the economy, but it is not our economy. It has become a silly political talking point when it benefits us and something we sweep under the rug when it doesn’t. And in that sense, it’s silly to prescribe market performance based on the political party of the President. The reality is that whenever something crazy happens, like a World War, global pandemic, oil crisis, threat of nuclear attack, the president’s job is to lead the country, not the market. There are many factors influencing our markets. Financial leadership looks to the President, Congress, and the Federal Reserve to decide how to best proceed. But at the end of the day, people don’t weigh the worth of a President by their political affiliation, whether they’ll raise taxes or whether they’ll be good for the market; they weigh the president by the positive and negative impacts they have on the lives of normal people. And perhaps, more importantly, what they do when things go wrong.</body></html>

<html><body>Fintech had a breakout moment during the pandemic. Companies like Robinhood and Coinbase became some of the most public success stories, adding millions of retail investors throughout the pandemic. However, in a world not all distant from these, there is a new class of fintech catering to a new asset class: private companies.Crowdfunding sites such as <a href="https://www.startengine.com/">StartEngine</a>, <a href="https://bullish.studio/articles/investing-in-private-companies">Republic</a> and <a href="https://www.fundable.com/">Fundable</a> are some of the players at the forefront of the “private investing” space. Their platforms serve as a marketplace to help startups raise from the masses and help working-class people access an asset class that <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/accreditedinvestor.asp">has historically been limited to the wealthy</a>. But a federal regulator’s recent changes means that crowdfunding might be about to get a lot more popular: <a href="https://republic.co/blog/investor-education/huge-news-sec-raises-regulation-crowdfunding-limit-from-1-07mm-to-5mm">Private companies can now raise up to $5 million from crowdfunding</a>.The decision to allow companies to raise more money from more people is a great thing for companies. It might even be a good thing for people who invest in companies that are successful. In that sense, these changes are welcome ones. However, it does give us pause: Should working-class people be investing in private companies at all? In the traditional “big money” venture model, partners raise money for large funds. They then use the money raised (mostly from high net-worth accredited investors) to write checks. Those checks are investments in companies, which could be at varied points in their journey. These venture capitalists generally spend hundreds of hours on due diligence, research and meeting the team before investing. But no matter how much work they do, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10000872396390443720204578004980476429190">it’s a reality that three out of four startups will fail</a>. This number might vary from fund-to-fund. Some VCs and accelerators are particularly talented at ‘picking’ winners. However, there is always going to be some attrition. Some investors morbidly refer to it as “infant mortality.”Statistically, they only need a handful of companies to succeed in order to break even or get a return in their fund. The winners might generate cash flow (from dividends or ownership interests) or sell for many multiples more than their original investment: 5x, 10x, maybe 25x. Some especially lucky, early-stage investors might see 50x or 100x checks if a company goes public or gets bought.To most people, that risk/reward sounds great. But those high net-worth individuals and VCs have the luxury of a lot of money and plenty of checks to write. Most working-class people do not. This is not an attack on working-class people having options. I think we can generally agree that having freedom to do more is a generally positive thing. Private investments are <a href="https://republic.co/learn/investors/crowdsafe">notoriously illiquid</a>, generally take time to generate a return and have a high likelihood of failure. So it’s quite possible that working-class Americans would be better off investing in more liquid vehicles such as stocks or crypto, accruing the kind of wealth necessary to start writing checks like the big boys. Private crowdfunding is likely still in its early stages, and we will see <a href="https://bullish.studio/articles/investing-in-private-companies">larger, more reputable companies</a> opting to crowdfund on these sites. That shift is already taking place and visible with high-profile brands like <a href="https://republic.co/gumroad">Gumroad, which sold out their raise on Republic</a> at the new $5 million limit. As more big players get into this space, there will be an increased interest in startup investing. However, with that will come scores of opportunistic people investing in private companies, not having a clue what they’re doing, because it’s “trendy” or because they think they can become the next <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Thiel">Peter Thiel</a>. If or when that day comes where private investing is simplified into TikToks and waters down the risk — look for lessons in the history of crypto speculation, SPACs, and momentum stocks. Value is arbitrary. Invest in what you think is valuable. The problem is that most working-class people are easily sold at the sight of dollar signs. They’ll think this is “their shot” and throw their money in. For some, this will work. But for most, they will lose.</body></html>

<html><body>The chips in our computers, graphics cards, cars, microwaves, refrigerators and phones are in short supply these days. A global semiconductor shortage is making it hard for everybody to get their hands on this necessary technology. Most of this shortage was self-inflicted. Take car companies for example; they didn’t expect millions of deliveries when the pandemic began to ravage the economy, but that’s what they ended up getting. The Biden administration has pledged to help address the shortage, but established semiconductor players are positioning for a life after COVID. There has been no shortage of merger &amp; acquisition activity in the sector during COVID. Let’s take a look: 💡Analog Devices took out Maxim Integrated in an acquisition in July 2020. The deal was worth $21 billion. Since July, $ADI has jumped 30% and $MXIM went on a 60% dash of its own. 💡In September, NVIDIA signed a deal to acquire English semiconductor business Arm Holdings. The $40 billion deal was one of the flashier figures in the industry. $NVDA has traded sideways since the deal, only up 0.3% since the start of September. 💡In October, AMD announced their plan to acquire Xilinx for $35 billion. $AMD is down 4% and $XLNX has gained 23% since October. 💡Last week, Micron Technology and Western Digital were reported to be exploring a joint deal to acquire Kioxia Holdings, a Japanese semiconductor player owned in part by Toshiba. Kioxia is reported to be focusing on an IPO instead. Regardless, $WDC has risen 39% and $MU has risen 26% since the start of 2021. This shakeup in the semiconductor space might be a sign of things to come. Companies like Intel have announced plans to start making their own chips in America, rather than outsourcing them to industry leaders like TSMC and Global Foundry. Samsung is gearing up to try and take on the global leader in semiconductor: Taiwan Semiconductor. However, there’s no assurance that anybody will get close to their size or presence in the space.</body></html>

Stonks Only Go Up: Chad Explains

Welcome back to “Money Drama,” where our host Stock Will guides you through all the ups and downs, twists and turns of last week’s markets.

In a fresh episode, our host takes a deep dive into the ongoing controversy regarding the NCAA’s treatment of college athletes. The Supreme Court is currently deliberating on NCAA v. Alston, a landmark case that could forever change the business of sports and higher education. 

A quick primer: The NCAA prevents student athletes from receiving financial compensation or benefits outside of scholarships because it wants to “protect a tradition of amateurism in college sports.”

But both former and current athletes say this isn’t enough, and they should be eligible to receive unlimited benefits (as long as they’re tied to education). This could include school equipment like laptops and textbooks, or even funding for study abroad or post-graduation internships. 

The NCAA disagrees, and thinks changing its rules about compensation would make college sports more like a professional league. 

That said, if the NCAA is making billions of dollars thanks to college players, shouldn’t the actual athletes be entitled to something more than a scholarship? 

The issue has heated up so much that there’s now a hashtag #NotNCAAProperty trending on Twitter in support of the student athletes who feel exploited by the institution. 

Here, Stock Will highlights some of the most striking responses to the ongoing conflict, and explains if the takes are straight-up BULLSHIT or if they’re right on the money. 

The Supreme Court won’t make a decision for a couple months, but our host has some thoughts in the meantime…

Tesla & General Motors: These two U.S. automakers were the only two companies that maxed their quota under the last EV tax plan. When the companies built 200,000 cars, the rebates would no longer be available to new buyers. This bill pledges to change the quota, but to what extent is uncertain. Regardless, $TSLA and $GM are already arguably the two most popular EV producers. They stand to benefit the most.

Chargepoint: $CHPT is one of the oldest EV companies and has already jumped over 38% on the news around the infrastructure plan. The company boasts over 114,700 charging locations globally.

Volkswagen: $VWAGY plans to begin mass-producing electric vehicles next year. Whilst they’re not as technically competitive as $TSLA, they are still the biggest automaker in the world. The company owns Audi, Bugatti, Bentley, and others. They’re also owned by Porsche, which trades at a slight discount as $POAHY.

BMW: $BWMYY is another European automaker throwing their energy behind EVs. The company boasts an EV version of their MINI, a compact sedan called the BMW i3, and an electric SUV called the X3.

In a fresh episode, Stock Will talks about how GameStop shares fell by a whopping 33% earlier this week, after the company decided to blow up its current business model (brick-and-mortar sales) and pivot to e-commerce. 

In Stock Will’s opinion, the switch to an e-commerce biz is likely a result of the company seeing a 175% jump in digital sales last quarter. Plus, the company now has the former CEO of Chewy (a full e-commerce business) on its board of directors, which might have sparked additional pressure to make the jump to e-commerce.

⏰ Today’s biggest Ripper is American watchmaker Movado. The company radically exceeded the Q4 earnings, delivering nearly double the expected earnings per share than was estimated. This came even as revenue dipped for the company. The surprise caused $MOV to rise 18.6% today.
